There are some scents which take a while to grow on you, they take their time unfolding on the skin into something that slowly grasps your attention. Other fragrances can be...difficult. They're challenging and might take a while for you to fully appreciate them. However, some scents capture you straight away, they're easy to love and you find yourself reaching for them often.
I can easily say that Sonoma Scent Studio Voile de Violette is one of those scents, it's up there on my list of top violet scents and ever since I order my sample (and subsequent bottle) I've been totally smitten. Whereas some violets are cheerful, bright and sparkling, Voile de Violette is dark, damp and earthy. It lacks the candied sweetness of my other favourite violet (Annick Goutal La Violette) and is, instead, is shadowed, mysterious floral.
Although violet is the namesake note for this perfume, iris is very much a major player and the root-y, powdery note of iris makes Voile de Violette feel dusky. There is also a gentle wood undertone and a subtle greenery, violet leaf and cedar help to ground the iris and violet notes. It's much like the damp floor of a forest filled with violets, cool and shady. Taking a breath of Voile de Violette is like the first part of the morning, before the rest of the house wakes up and the sun is barely peeking over the horizon. It's peaceful, serene and private.
Sonoma Scent Studio is a fantastic fragrance line, check out my reviews on the comforting Opal and bold Vintage Rose. While Sonoma Scent Studio isn't available for testing in stores in Australia, samples can be purchased via their website.
