A little while ago I tweeted/Instagrammed about decorating the spare bedroom in my flat and a few of you said you'd be interested in seeing a post about it. I've not done any kind of home decor posts before so I hope you enjoy it and maybe you'll get some inspiration if you're considering jazzing up one of your rooms.

When my boyfriend and I first moved into our flat, it was a total blank canvas. Cream walls, cream carpet and completely empty. However, over the past two years we've been living here we've slowly but surely added our own personal touch to each room and made it more homely. We added a feature wall to our bedroom, got a stylish corner sofa for the living room, put pictures on the walls, dotted accessories around and so on. However, the one room that we hadn't paid any attention to was our spare room. Or 'the box' room. Most flats or houses have them and most of them get neglected becasue they're too small to do a great deal with. We originally just had a double bed in there so guests had somewhere to stay when they came to visit but it took over the entire room and wasn't very practical. That's when we decided we'd utilise the space more and turn it into a multi-purpose room. We wanted it to be a space where we can sit and chill out but also somewhere our family and friends could stay when they come to visit.

The first step in changing the room from bedroom/junk room was to clear everything out, get rid of the humongous bed and replace it with a sofa bed. We didn't have a clue what colour we wanted the room to be but we knew we wanted something fairly bright and fun as our main living room is decorated in neutral shades. After doing a bit of searching around online we came across a lime green sofa. Yes you heard me right, lime green. Its not a colour I'd ever think to decorate a room with but when we saw it, my boyfriend and I both loved it and had a 'vision' of how it'd look in the room. A few months earlier we'd bought a New York wall mural from ebay that covers a whole wall and we figured the black and white would look great with a bright contrasting colour - hence the lime green.

We then needed to jazz the room up a bit so we made a trip to trusty Ikea (my favourite place ever) to buy some furniture and accessories. No room would be complete without some cushions so my first purchase in Ikea was two of the Ikea Stockholm cushions - they're so squishy and I love the monochrome design. We decided white would be the best colour to go for in terms of furniture so it would tie in nicely with our black/white and lime green theme. We picked up the BESTA shelf unit to go above the TV on the wall (which my boyfriends parents very kindly gave us) and the LACK shelving unit as we spotted it whilst mooching around and thought it was pretty unusual. We also bought lots of lime green/black and white accessories to go on the unit and I'm chuffed to bits with how its turned out. Its a nice focal point and adds a touch of femininity to the room. We also picked up a standard MALM chest of 2 drawers to go next to the sofa which was a bargain at only £25. I love the MALM range and we have it in our bedroom too - its simple, stylish and affordable. On top of the unit we've got a black table lamp from ASDA which was as cheap as chips and a reed diffuser which one of my lovely friends bought me as part of my birthday present. We're still deciding wether we want another one of these units to go on the other side of the sofa so for now we've just popped a stand alone stainless steel light there which we already had.

Finally, you might have noticed that we've popped some little spotlights above the TV and these have to be my favourite purchase of the whole room. We actually bought them from ALDI of all places and they were a huge bargain at £5.99 for a pack of three. They're powdered by batteries so you litterally just stick them on and press them to turn them on. Genius! They look great lit up when the room is dark and I can't wait to cosy up on the sofa and watch a movie with them shining. It'll be like a little home cinema.

So there we have it, my new spare room. Sorry for the long post but you know me, I like to explain things in detail! The only thing we've got left to do in the room now is get some new flooring and something we can put our feet up on while watching a movie! Perhaps a 'poof' or whatever the heck you call them.

What do you think of my new spare room? Do you like reading home decor posts?

Lots of Love,
